2006 Cypress Mountain Race Report

By Dave Howells
Yeti Snowshoe Academy - Team Yeti Manager
Saturday March 11, 2006

Paint a picture of the perfect day and you had the Final Yeti in front of you. Total blue bird with fresh snow is what participants woke up to on Saturday morning. It is so easy to roll out of bed when you know that up top is another world of white, fresh, clean surroundings so inviting, so beautiful, you smile and say to yourself, "today is a good day". I would like to comment on the weather for The Yeti Series this season. We have been blessed with outstanding conditions for each event. It really can go the other way, think about what kind of weather a mountaintop can offer up in winter and you truly begin to appreciate race day conditions through out this season.

Racers rolled in and got ready with over 125 on the start line. Race Director Marc Campbell soon realized that another goal had been achieved. The Yeti can be known for "The biggest and best snowshoe race in Canada". This is a great achievement one that Marc has worked hard for, congratulations!

This was going to be a big day for some of the top racers as final standings would be decided after the event. Although a couple top spots were up for grabs, most of the overall standings had already been decided. Andrew Clark from Team Snowrunning.com has been unstoppable this season winning 3 out of the 4 races. An even better record exist amongst the female category with Carry Sather winning 4 out 4. Rob Lang, my arc rival for the season has only been getting stronger, winning all 4 events this winter, ah well, there is always next season.

The Cypress course has real championship style offering up delicious single track, tough ups and tasty downs. The snow surface was soft under foot, making the racers work for the finish line. As the race unfolded it became evident that the top standings would stay consistent in the men and women's field. The top three men have been top three all season with Andrew Clark, Justin Mark and Ryan Irvine placing in that order. Similar to the top men, the top women consisting of Carey Sather, Lisa Polizzi and Lisa Floe have been the ones to bet for the season.
And what a great season it has been! Congratulations to all the competitors this year. I hope that you have enjoyed The Yeti Snowshoe Series and that you will come out again next winter!

It's not over yet, now that you have some foundation fitness, take it to the next level with, "The Yeti Ascent" Sunday April 9, ARE YOU UP FOR IT?
