Message From The Race Director

Well hasn't this been a really crazy season for the Yeti. I have some not so good news to announce but also some great news to follow so stay with me here. Here is a list of all the cancellations for the remainder of the Yeti season.
  • Mount Washington - I thought that they would get some snow late in the season and we would be able to still run the race there but due to not enough snow we cannot.

  • Cypress Mountain - Cypress is closed and because of that they have told me that I cannot run my event unless they are open for business.

  • Whistler / Final Yeti - Again, due to not enough snow from the village up we will not be able to run the Final Yeti at Whistler. For those of you that have been collecting points to be the overall Yeti champion you will be able to have one last event to collect points to be used in conjunction with your previous points.

  • Manning Park Ultra Yeti - Manning Park has also had a bad year for snow and we won't be able to run the newest edition to the Yeti, the 25km Ultra Yeti. This will be a great addition next season.
I told you the bad news and now here's the good, it's better than good news it's great news. The Yeti would like to announce the birth of yet another Yeti event, that's called the Yeti Ascent.

The Yeti Ascent will leave from Deep Cove and go all the way to Pump Peak at Mount Seymour with an elevation gain of 4500'. This will be mainly a trail run/hike with a snowshoe component to it and you can do it solo or relay with a friend. This is a very appealing event to everyone as it will mainly be a hike for most but will also have the competitive side to it. Who will be the first to finish, what team will take the win and who will grab the cash? There will be a $100 CASH GRAB for the first man and woman to reach the Peak. We will be giving away $5000 worth of draw prizes and a prize package of clothing and gear worth over $2000 but you have to be there to win. There are 200 early bird spots for $25 available from now until April 1 at which point pre-registration will be $35 until April 14th. Snowshoe rentals are available but are on a first come first serve, so book early! To find out more info on the Yeti Ascent click here.

We will use the Yeti Ascent as the Final Yeti for people that have been collecting points throughout the series. and we will have an award for the overall male and female Yeti Champion.

For those of you that have pre-registered for any of these races you can use your entry for the Yeti Ascent, just email marc@theyeti.ca and I'll make the switch. If you do not want to transfer your entry to the Yeti Ascent then it will be transferred to any race next season. We are hoping that this kind of weather doesn't hit our winter season again, but if it does we will be prepared. Next season the Yeti will run the race even if there isn't enough snow, we will turn any of the events that don't have enough snow into a trail run / snowshoe race, this way there won't be any postponements or cancellations. If you have any questions or comments about this please contact marc@theyeti.ca.

Volunteers for the Yeti Ascent are needed. If you would like to or know someone that would like to volunteer at the Yeti Ascent please contact lisa@theyeti.ca.

Team Yeti Canada Represents in US Snowshoe Championships

With the U.S National Snowshoe Championships taking place in Anchorage, Alaska last week, Team Yeti Canada sent 3 men to race in the race. Representing the team was Andrew Clarke, 31, Dom Repta, 31, and Michael Campbell-Burn, 48.

The course, designed by snowshoe guru Mark Elmore, proved to provide participants with a superb course of rolling double track, winding single track and steep climb's which challenged all participants. The U.S fielded a strong team with veterans Charlie Wertheim, Aaron Robertson and Jesse Haynes ready to blast the field. With a total of 100 participants toeing the line, once the gun blasted at the start, it was nothing short of a suffer-fest. Andrew Clarke or Team Yeti took the early lead through the first 5km of the race. "The pace was quite comfortable at the start, but once the steep climbs started, the race started to change its face" Clarke, battled back and fourth between 3rd and 7th and once he realized top ten was in his sights, he hammered through the single track with reckless abandon. When the snow settled, Clarke finished 5th overall, the best place finish ever for a Canadian. This was fast enough to qualify him for the US team…but he's Canadian!!

Further back, Repta and Campbell-Burns were fighting their own battles. Repta with a ton of ultra racing experience always finds the fast paced start torturous. "I settled in once the technical single track started and managed to pass about 5 people" I wanted top 20, and managed to pull a 15th out. Next year, I'll hammer on the bike, as it seems that cyclists always dominate these races, so hopefully a top ten will be in the cards.

The oldest member of the team, Michael Campbell-Burns, and of Aussie origin, never thought he'd race on snowshoes. When asked about this, he just laughs. "Clarke and Repta dragged me around the course the day before the race to check it out, and I actually PB'd on that run, so I was not sure what to expect on race day." Well, he PB'd again, running 3 minutes faster and finished 35th overall. "I've never run so hard in my life, I think my average heart rate was in the 190's"

With this being the first appearance of a Canadian based team in the US Nationals, it set the stage for next year. Team Yeti Canada plans to race in the European, U.S and Canadian Nationals next year.
