History

The Yeti™ Mountain Snowshoe Series was founded in 2001 by Marc Campbell (formerly Cooney) and Rick Carty in response to an ever-increasing demand for managed outdoor adventure. It is Canada's first mountain snowshoe series and is open to participants at all skill levels, from beginner through advanced level athletes, who want to be outdoors and having fun.

Named after the Abominable Snowman that roams the Himalayas, the Yeti™ started its first season with three races, two on Mount Seymour and one on Cypress Mountain, each with both 5km and 10km courses.

Year two, the Yeti™ moved into the Interior of BC to Sun Peaks Resort and also added a final to the series at Whistler/Blackcomb. This would now make the series Seymour, Cypress, Sun Peaks and Whistler. Even with the lack of snow, the Yeti™ still managed to grow in participation.

Year three, there were six Yeti™ events, two in the Interior Mountains, Silver Star and Sun Peaks, two Coastal Mountains, Mount Seymour and Cypress Mountain, Mt. Washington on Vancouver Island and Whistler/Blackcomb. The season began in January and finishing in April 2004.

Today

The Yeti™ will focus on three areas of British Columbia, Vancouver Island, Whistler and the Lower mainland. This way the Yeti will be more concentrated and can focus on developing those areas to ensure growth in the sport and recreation of snowshoeing. The Yeti Snowshoe Academy™ is back with all the same programs we offered last season. The event that came out of a bad season that shows the most promise is the Yeti Ascent™, this half trail run half snowshoe will end up being the end of snowshoe season Spring Classic for years to come!

This season we have the best Plan B and ready to be implemented for any weather condition. If we have great conditions the Yeti™ will remain the same as usual, 2 laps of 5km. If the weather is not cooperating and we don't have enough snow we will run a 5km and a 10km loop that both start out on running shoes and transition into snowshoes at the snow line and run or hike the snowshoe section and then back on your running shoes to the finish. This will ensure that we won't have to postpone or cancel events, plus everyone likes the whole transition thing!

Future

The future goal for Yeti™ is to continue to provide a challenging, and fun outdoor experience at mountains across Canada. To also help raise the profile for the sport of snowrunning to help it one day become and Olympic sport.

Mission

The Yeti™ Mountain Snowshoe Series is an event that provides a fun adventure in a safe environment. We want to change people's lives through social and physical activities. The Yeti™ attracts people that not only want to get out and enjoy winter, but also people that have their own personal challenges and goals to meet or exceed.
